Vegan Fresh Breath Biscuits for Dogs

Yield: Approx. 30 small biscuits
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 20–25 minutes
Total time: 35–40 minutes
Suitable for: Healthy adult dogs as an occasional treat
Not suitable for: Dogs with known grain sensitivities, pancreatitis requiring strict fat control, or dogs on a veterinary-prescribed elimination diet unless approved by your vet/nutritionist.

Ingredients

  • 180g oat flour or spelt flour
  • 20g fresh flat leaf parsley, finely chopped
  • 10g fresh mint, finely chopped
  • 1 small ripe banana, mashed
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil or olive oil ( do not use Coconut oil for dogs with MCADD)
  • 1–3 tbsp extra water, if needed to form a dough

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 170°C fan / 190°C / Gas Mark 5.
  2. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  3. Mix the ground flaxseed with 3 tbsp water and leave for 5 minutes to thicken.
  4. In a bowl, combine the flour, chopped parsley and chopped mint.
  5. Add the mashed banana, flaxseed mixture and oil.
  6. Mix until a dough forms. Add a little extra water if the mixture is too dry.
  7. Roll the dough out to around ½ cm thick.
  8. Cut into small biscuit shapes.
  9. Place on the baking tray and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until firm and lightly golden.
  10. Allow to cool fully before feeding.

For a crunchier biscuit, turn the oven off and leave the biscuits inside with the door slightly open for another 20–30 minutes.

Storage Instructions

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3–5 days.

For longer storage:

  • Keep in the fridge for up to 7 days
  • Freeze for up to 3 months
  • Defrost before feeding

Feeding Guide

These biscuits are treats, not a complete diet. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calorie intake.

That means 90% of calories should come from a complete and balanced food, with treats, chews, toppers and extras all counted within the remaining 10%.

As a rough guide:

Dog size

Suggested amount

Small dogs

½–1 biscuit per day

Medium dogs

1–2 biscuits per day

Large dogs

2–3 biscuits per day

The exact amount depends on the size of your biscuit cutter, your dog’s weight, activity level and overall diet.

Can parsley and mint help dog breath?

Parsley and mint can help give a fresher smell to the breath, but they will not fix the underlying cause of bad breath. Persistent bad breath in dogs is often linked to dental disease, gum inflammation, digestive issues, or other health concerns.

If your dog’s breath is suddenly worse, very strong, fishy, metallic, or accompanied by drooling, pain, reduced appetite or pawing at the mouth, book a vet check. Homemade breath biscuits are a nice extra, but they are not a replacement for dental care.
